A man who contaminated sweets with sedative and provided them to children at a summer program in the area has confessed to sexual crimes against two children both between nine and ten.

Jon Ruben was arrested after eight children and one adult experienced illness at the location in the summer month.

The elderly man, from the Nottinghamshire area, confessed to a total of 17 charges when he was present at the judicial center on the end of the week.

Yet, he denied one particular crime he was accused of, which was concerning a young boy.

Ruben was held in detention ahead of a additional proceeding on late November.

'Candy game'

The prosecutor, handling the case, detailed Ruben's offending to the legal proceedings.

She stated his targets were under-privileged children who were staying at a summer camp which he operated.

The defendant conducted a "sweet game" with the minors, the prosecutor said, in which he would access the children's bedrooms when they were preparing to sleep and request they to consume candy "as quickly as they can".

She informed the proceedings the man had conducted this practice with the boys "over an extended period", and youngsters had earlier experienced illness the next day.

She said the defendant had been capable of justifying this over a long period as the children being "overwrought by enjoyment", until his family member had worries in summer 2025.

The legal representative stated further: "This year his stepson had concerns about the activities, for good reason.

"They decided to have a look in the man's possessions."

The prosecutor stated materials including lubricant, petroleum jelly and medical needles were discovered, and his stepson contacted the law enforcement about his suspicions.

She explained Ruben continued to engage in the "sweet game" with six youngsters that time - that Saturday - and they were all ill the following morning.

"Authorities" had not gone out by that stage," she continued.

The oversight body, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, earlier informed that it was examining law enforcement's management of the situation.

The prosecutor stated the children were having difficulty walking due to their sickness, so the family member notified the law enforcement once more.

She said the man then engaged in the "sweet game" in a room of five minors.
